Calgary to host field hockey, swimming nationals

OTTAWA – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday that the University of Calgary has been awarded the right to host a pair of CIS championship events: field hockey in 2011 and swimming in 2013.

The announcement extends a lengthy streak of hosting national championships for the University of Calgary. Beginning with the 2006 CIS women's volleyball championship through to the already-awarded men's volleyball tournament in 2014, Calgary will play host to at least one CIS event for nine consecutive years.

The field hockey championship, which will run Nov. 3-6 at Hawkings Field, starts a busy 2011-12 season for the Dinos that already includes the 2012 CIS women's basketball Final 8 in late March. It's the third time Calgary has hosted the field hockey tournament after previously organizing it in 1982 and 1994.

“The field hockey program at the University of Calgary is very excited to welcome the country's top field hockey teams and people to Calgary this fall,” said Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar. “Our community in Calgary is eager to share our western culture and hospitality!”

Meanwhile, the two-time defending CIS men's and women's swimming champion Dinos will take one year off from hosting the national championships. Calgary captured both national banners at home last February while hosting the event for the first time since 1974. After a brief detour through Montreal in 2012, the CIS swimming championships return to the UC Aquatic Centre Feb. 21-23, 2013.

“We're very excited to be able to host the country again in 2013,” said CIS men's and women's coach of the year Mike Blondal. “It will be another great opportunity for our swimmers, our university, and the Calgary community to see a high-level swimming competition.”
